North American ECA
The sixtieth session of the IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee adopted amendments to MARPOL Annex VI designate US/Canadian waters as an Emission Control Area (ECA). The new ECA will cover an area 200 miles from the coasts of the United States and Canada and enter into force on 1 August 2011, becoming effective 12 months later, i.e. 1 August 2012, from which date ships transiting the area will have to use fuel with a sulphur content of no more than 1.0%
